(May 30, 2026) As the core inorganic filler in the rubber, new energy, and new materials sectors, the domestic silica industry is moving away from extensive capacity expansion and fully entering the fast lane of green, low-carbon, high-end iteration, and intelligent production. Recently, many silica technology transformation projects in China have been launched and put into operation, environmental production standards have been comprehensively upgraded, and combined with the high-end demand from emerging downstream industries, the optimization of industry capacity structure has accelerated, and the clearance of outdated low-end capacity is accelerating, making the trend of high-quality industrial development increasingly clear.

For a long time, China's silica production capacity has ranked first globally, making it the largest producer and exporter globally. However, the industry has long suffered from structural issues such as excess low-end capacity, insufficient high-end products, and high energy consumption in production. To break industry development bottlenecks, since the beginning of this year, core production areas such as Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui have continuously tightened environmental protection standards in the chemical industry, introducing special regulations for the treatment of wastewater, waste gas, and solid waste during the silica production process, forcing companies to upgrade equipment and innovate processes. Traditional extensive sedimentation production processes are gradually being phased out, and green technologies such as closed intelligent production lines, waste heat recovery, and wastewater recycling have become industry standards.

According to the latest statistics from industry associations, as of the end of May, the effective production capacity of the domestic silica industry exceeded 4.5 million tons, with green and intelligent capacity accounting for over 65%, an increase of 8 percentage points compared to the same period last year. A large number of small and medium-sized inefficient production capacities have been forced to shut down for rectification due to environmental standards and outdated technology, with industry capacity concentration continuing to rise. Leading companies have increased investment in R&D and technological transformation, focusing on core energy-saving and carbon-reduction technologies. By optimizing reaction processes and upgrading purification equipment, they have significantly reduced production energy consumption and pollutant emissions. The comprehensive energy consumption per ton of product has dropped by more than 12% year-on-year, significantly improving the level of green production.

Alongside process innovation, the results of product high-end transformation are also evident. In the past, the domestic white carbon black market was dominated by low-end products such as ordinary rubber fillers and feed carriers, which had low added value and fierce market competition. With the rapid development of emerging industries such as new energy vehicles, photovoltaics, lithium batteries, and high-end coatings, the market demand for highly dispersed, ultra-fine, high-purity, and modified specialty white carbon black has exploded. These high-end products, with advantages such as wear resistance, anti-aging, low rolling resistance, and high stability, have become core raw materials for new energy tires, photovoltaic sealants, lithium battery separator coatings, and high-end silicone rubber.

Currently, leading domestic companies have achieved large-scale mass production of high-end modified silica and ultrafine fumed silica, completely breaking the long-standing monopoly of overseas companies. Domestically produced high-end silica products have reached internationally advanced performance levels, not only fully replacing domestic imports but also exporting in bulk to Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and other markets. The proportion of high-end product exports continues to rise, becoming a new profit growth point for the industry. Compared to ordinary products, the added value of high-end specialty silica has more than doubled, effectively reversing the industry's low-price competition and development difficulties.

Intelligent production has become another major highlight of industry transformation. Since the beginning of this year, several silica producers have built digital smart factories. Through automated batching, intelligent temperature control, and online quality monitoring systems, they achieve precise control throughout the entire production process. This not only greatly improves product stability and yield rates but also effectively reduces labor costs and production losses. Intelligent transformation enables companies to quickly adjust product formulas according to downstream differentiated needs, customize the production of special silica products adapted to different scenarios, and greatly enhance market adaptability.

Regarding future industry development, experts say that the silica industry has completely moved beyond the era of extensive scale expansion, and greening, high-end, and intelligent development will become the core themes of future development. As the downstream new energy and new materials industries continue to expand, demand for high-end silica is expected to maintain long-term growth. At the same time, the pace of survival of the fittest in the industry will continue to accelerate. Small and medium-sized manufacturers lacking advantages in technology, capacity, and environmental protection will gradually exit the market, and resources will continue to concentrate among leading high-quality companies.

Overall, relying on the dual support of technological innovation and green transformation, the domestic silica industry is transforming from a "large production capacity country" to an "industrial powerhouse," with continuous enhancement of industrial added value and core competitiveness, and ongoing release of future development potential.
