Subdivided categories bloom at multiple points The silica industry accurately adapts to downstream scenarios to achieve differentiated breakthroughs

(April 22, 2026) Today, it was learned from the Domestic Silica Industry Segmentation Category Development Forum that as the requirements for raw material performance in various downstream industries become more refined and personalized, China's silica industry has shifted from a situation where "general-purpose products dominated the market" to a new phase characterized by "precise adaptation of segmented categories and differentiated competition." Each segmented category leverages its unique advantages to accurately meet the needs of different downstream applications, enabling the industry to achieve high-quality breakthroughs and representing a new direction for development.

For a long time, the domestic silica market has primarily focused on general-purpose precipitated silica, leading to severe product performance homogenization. Companies relied on price competition to gain market share, which limited the industry's profit margins and made it difficult to meet the demands of high-end and special applications in downstream sectors. In recent years, with product upgrades in industries such as rubber, coatings, food, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, there have been more specific requirements for silica in terms of performance, specifications, and purity. This has compelled the upstream industry to accelerate the development of specialized segments.

In the rubber industry, silica categories are showing a trend of "precise matching and functional specialization." To meet the needs of new energy vehicle tires for low rolling resistance and high wear resistance, specialized low-rolling-resistance silicas are now being used on a large scale, effectively reducing tire rolling resistance and increasing the range of new energy vehicles. For high-end rubber seals that require resistance to extreme temperatures and aging, specially modified silicas have become key materials due to their excellent compatibility and stability. Ordinary consumer rubber products, on the other hand, use more cost-effective general-purpose modified silicas to balance cost and performance.

In addition to the traditional rubber industry, the category of fumed silica in emerging niche markets such as fine chemicals and food and pharmaceuticals is also experiencing rapid growth. In the coatings and inks sector, matte fumed silica, with its uniform particle size distribution, can achieve a matte finish on the surface of coatings, meeting the requirements for high-end furniture and automotive interiors. In the food industry, food-grade fumed silica is used as an anti-caking agent and flow aid in the production of powdered foods and condiments, with purity and safety standards that meet international norms. In the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical-grade fumed silica is used for filling and suspending drug formulations, helping to enhance drug stability and dissolution rates.

At the corporate level, leading domestic fumed silica manufacturers are increasing their research and development investment in niche categories to create specialized products that address specific downstream applications, thereby building their core competitiveness. Some companies have developed high-purity, low-impurity electronic-grade fumed silica for use in 5G equipment and semiconductor packaging. Others are focusing on the daily chemicals sector, producing customized fumed silica with different hydrophilic or hydrophobic properties for use in thickening and adsorption applications in cosmetics and toothpaste.

Industry analysts point out that differentiated development in niche categories is key for the fumed silica industry to overcome homogeneous competition and increase the added value of its products.In the future, as downstream applications continue to expand, the subcategories of fumed silica will become even more diverse. Companies will place greater emphasis on scenario-specific research and development and precise adaptation. Leveraging the technical advantages of these subcategories, they will establish a direct connection between "products" and "applications," facilitating the transformation of China's fumed silica industry from "scale competition" to "value competition" and achieving high-quality industrial development.
