Classification and characteristics of gas-phase silica

Hits: 580 img

Gas phase silica (gas-phase white carbon black) is a high-purity, ultrafine amorphous silica material prepared by chemical vapor deposition method, with unique physical and chemical properties. According to its surface properties and application requirements, gas-phase silica can be divided into the following categories:

Hydrophilic gas-phase silica
Hydrophilic fumed silica is an untreated fumed silica with a large amount of active silicon hydroxyl groups (Si OH) on its surface, exhibiting high hydrophilicity. The specific surface area of this material is usually between 100-400 m ²/g, and the primary particle size is about 7-40 nanometers. Due to its hydrophilicity, hydrophilic fumed silica has good dispersibility in aqueous systems, but poor compatibility with organic polymer matrices.

Application areas:
Rubber industry: used as a reinforcing agent for silicone rubber, which can significantly improve the tensile strength and wear resistance of rubber.
Coatings and inks: used as thickeners and thixotropes to prevent pigment settling and improve rheological properties.
Food and medicine: used as anti caking agents and dispersants in food packaging materials and pharmaceutical preparations.

Hydrophobic gas-phase silica
Hydrophobic fumed silica is a surface modified fumed silica, typically treated with silane coupling agents or other organic modifiers to treat hydrophilic fumed silica. This treatment can transform hydrophilic surfaces into hydrophobic surfaces, thereby improving their dispersibility and compatibility in organic polymers.

Application areas:
Plastic industry: As a filler, it improves the mechanical properties and heat resistance of plastics.
Electronic materials: used as electronic packaging materials to improve the insulation and heat dissipation properties of materials.
Adhesives and sealants: As rheological control agents, they prevent settlement and provide reinforcement effects.

Functional fumed silica
Functional fumed silica is endowed with specific functional properties through a special surface modification process. For example, by grafting specific functional groups or composite with other materials, gas-phase silica with special properties can be prepared.

Application areas:
In the field of new energy, it is used to improve the performance of electrode materials, enhance the cycling stability and safety of lithium-ion batteries.
Environmental protection: As a catalyst carrier, it is used in fields such as oxidation desulfurization.
Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals: used as carrier materials for drug delivery and functional additives in cosmetics.

The classification of gas-phase silica is mainly based on its surface properties and modification processes, and different classifications determine its unique applications in different fields. With the continuous advancement of technology, the application scope of gas-phase silica will be further expanded.
