There is no difference between fumed silica and precipitated silica, both of which are chemically named silicon dioxide. However, the gas-phase method uses silicon tetrachloride and the silicon dioxide obtained by air combustion, with fineness of more than 1000 mesh. The precipitation method uses sodium silicate and sulfuric acid to precipitate the silicon dioxide. The fineness is only 300-400 mesh. Fumed silica is expensive and difficult to absorb moisture. Used in paint as a matting agent. Precipitated silica is cheap and easy to absorb moisture. It can only be used for filling and reinforcing rubber and plastic products
