Carbon black and white carbon black have different uses and properties

Hits: 931 img

The elemental composition of carbon black is mainly carbon, which is a carbon material with extremely special microstructure, particle morphology and surface properties. According to the preparation method and materials, it can be divided into furnace black, channel black, acetylene black, lampblack, and thermal black.

Use of carbon black
1 rubber reinforcement
As an important reinforcing agent and filler for rubber products, carbon black can improve the mechanical properties of rubber. Today, precipitated silica has gradually become its competitor.
2 light protection
The oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the carbon black react with the groups generated by the decomposition of the polymer by ultraviolet irradiation, thereby preventing further decomposition of the polymer. Therefore, a low blending amount of carbon black can shield the surface of the product from ultraviolet rays, but this also causes the color to become dark gray or black.
3 coloring effect
Carbon black is an important pigment for black inks and paints. Its basic properties directly affect the properties of blackness, rheology and gloss. In addition, carbon black is also commonly used in the color matching of plastic products.
4 enhanced conductivity
The development of special conductive carbon black with excellent performance enables conductivity of originally insulating polymers such as plastics. In addition, conductive carbon black is increasingly favored in the energy sector, such as (power) lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, and supercapacitors.

White carbon black
The so-called white carbon black is hydrated silica, and its molecular formula is SiO2•nH2O. Due to its large SiO2 content (greater than 90%), the original particle size is generally 10 to 40 nm. Because the surface contains more hydroxyl groups, it tends to absorb water and become aggregated fine particles. According to the production method, it can be divided into two categories, namely, precipitation method white carbon black and gas phase method white carbon black.
Precipitated silica
1 rubber reinforcement
White carbon black is mainly used as a reinforcing agent in the rubber field, and its use accounts for 70% of the total. Reinforced performance is second only to carbon black. It is even more suitable for carbon black, especially for the manufacture of white, colored and light-colored rubber products, after ultra-fine and proper surface treatment.
2 extinction
The white carbon black has a refractive index of 1.45 to 1.50, and a paint film containing a white carbon black matting agent, when incident light reaches the surface of the uneven paint film, diffuse reflection occurs, forming a low-gloss matt and matte appearance.
3 friction
White carbon black with large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity is one of the main types of friction agents for toothpaste. Because its refractive index is very close to other ingredients of toothpaste, it is suitable for the ingredients of transparent toothpaste.
4 paper sizing, strengthening
When white carbon black is used on paper, it improves the whiteness and opacity of the paper, improving printability, oil resistance and gloss. Adding 1 to 2% of white carbon black to the newsprint can reduce the weight of the paper by 10%, and also increase the strength and prevent ink penetration.
Gas phase white carbon black
1 reinforcing effect
Gas-phase white carbon black is a high-reinforcing filler material, which is often used in special occasions such as silicone rubber due to high cost and the like. The tensile strength of the unreinforced silicone rubber does not exceed 0.4 MPa, and after reinforcement, the strength can be increased by 40 times.
2 anti-settling, flow aid
When used in adhesives and sealants, silica can control rheology, prevent settling, and prevent sagging and reinforcement. In addition, it can be widely used as a rheological additive, anti-settling agent and dispersant in the fields of paints, inks and coatings.
3 Protection and carrying in cosmetics and medicines
When used in cosmetics, the fumed silica can effectively reflect ultraviolet rays, has a matting effect, and does not decompose or discolor after irradiation; when used as a carrier, it can also prolong the efficacy and promote the absorption of drugs or skin care products.
