Toothpaste Too Abrasive or Not Cleaning Well? Choosing Friction, Mixed or Thickening Silica — IOTA FINE SIL 7520A

Hits: 1913 img

A toothpaste can look perfect in the lab and still disappoint in use: too abrasive, too thin, or separating in the tube.

In most formulations, the deciding factor is not the flavor or the humectant — it is the silica.

IOTA FINE SIL 7520A is a toothpaste-grade precipitated silica supplied in friction, mixed and thickening types.

1. Why Does the Silica Type Matter?

Silica does two jobs in toothpaste at the same time:

  • Cleaning. Particle structure and size determine abrasion level and stain removal.
  • Rheology. The same powder builds the paste structure and controls consistency.

One grade cannot optimize both. That is why the product is supplied in three types, and why the formulation goal should be defined before selection.

2. What Is IOTA FINE SIL 7520A?

IOTA FINE SIL 7520A is an amorphous precipitated silica powder: tasteless, insoluble in water and acid, chemically inert, with good compatibility in fluoride toothpaste and with other raw materials.

Structure and particle size are controlled through production conditions. The product complies with the light industry standard QB/T2346-97.

3. Which Type Fits Which Goal?

Friction type (oil absorption 17–20 ml/20 g). For cleaning- and whitening-oriented pastes where higher abrasion is acceptable.

Mixed type (30–42 ml/20 g). A balance of cleaning and structure — the common choice for daily-use pastes.

Thickening type (45–60 ml/20 g). For viscosity build and paste stability, where cleaning is secondary.

4. How Should You Evaluate It?

A practical sequence:

  1. Define the target: RDA level, paste viscosity, fluoride stability.
  1. Select the starting type from the oil absorption range.
  1. Run a side-by-side trial against the current silica at equal loading.
  1. Compare consistency, cleaning feel, and viscosity after storage.

FAQ

1. Is FINE SIL 7520A compatible with fluoride?

Yes — good solubility behavior with fluoride toothpaste is a stated product feature. Compatibility in your formulation should still be confirmed.

2. Can one grade cover both cleaning and thickening?

The mixed type is designed as a balance. For strongly cleaning or strongly thickening formulations, the dedicated types perform better.

3. Is the product compliant with standards?

The series complies with QB/T2346-97.

4. What should buyers provide when requesting a sample?

Paste type, current silica grade, target loading and cleaning/viscosity goals.
