In applications such as architectural curtain walls and electronic potting, single-component room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV-1) silicone rubber often requires application on vertical or overhead surfaces. In these scenarios, the material must possess excellent "sag resistance"—the ability to maintain its shape under gravity without running or slumping. Fumed silica is a key additive for achieving this performance.

**Formation of a 3D Network Structure**
The core mechanism by which fumed silica improves sag resistance lies in its unique thixotropic properties. Fumed silica features extremely small primary particle sizes (7–40 nm), a massive specific surface area (typically >150 m²/g), and a surface rich in silanol groups. When dispersed within the RTV compound, hydrogen bonds form between the silanol groups on the particle surfaces, linking them into a loose, three-dimensional network structure.

**Imparting Thixotropic Properties**
This network structure confers significant thixotropy to the compound:

- **At Rest (High Viscosity):** When the sealant is at rest or in storage, the hydrogen-bonded network remains intact, resulting in very high viscosity and yield stress. The strength generated by this internal structure is sufficient to counteract gravity, effectively preventing the sealant from running or sagging on vertical surfaces.
- **During Application (Low Viscosity):** When subjected to shear force (such as extrusion from a caulking gun), the fragile hydrogen-bonded network rapidly breaks down; the compound's viscosity drops instantly, making it easy to extrude and apply.
- **Post-Application (Recovery):** Once the shear force is removed, the hydrogen-bonded network quickly reforms and viscosity recovers, effectively "locking" the sealant in place.

**Key Parameters and Selection**
In practical applications, the thixotropic index is typically adjusted by controlling the dosage of fumed silica (generally ranging from 5% to 12%). For demanding vertical joint sealing applications, hydrophobic fumed silica with a high specific surface area performs better; it not only provides excellent sag resistance but also avoids the storage-induced thickening issues sometimes associated with hydrophilic products, ensuring the RTV sealant is easy to dispense yet holds its shape firmly.
