Domestic silica has broken through overseas technical barriers, and the import substitution process has been comprehensively accelerated

(May 7, 2026) At the beginning of May 2026, China's silica industry ushered in a landmark development node, and the high-end vapor phase method and nano-modified silica field, which had been monopolized by overseas giants for a long time, realized mass production and marketization, completely broke the monopoly pattern of European, American, Japanese and South Korean enterprises, and industry import subsistence became the core development line throughout the year.

In the past few years, although the domestic silica production capacity has ranked first in the world, most of them are concentrated in the general precipitation method category used in tire rubber and ordinary coatings. High-end fields such as electronic packaging, precision sealing, high-end beauty, pharmaceutical accessories, high-end silicone rubber reinforcement and other high-purity, nano-scale, hydrophobic modified silica are highly dependent on imports, not only high purchase prices, but also supply cycles and formula adaptation.

This year, domestic silicon material companies have continued to increase R&D investment, and have made substantial breakthroughs in the three core technologies of precise nanoparticle size control, surface hydrophobic lipophilic modification, and high-purity purification process. Domestic high-end silica has been benchmarked against international first-line brands in key performance indicators such as dispersion, reinforcement, matting and anti-sedimentation, adsorption and oil control, and can be completely replaced under the same working conditions.

From the perspective of market landing, a number of enterprises have achieved stable mass production of high-end silica, and have successively entered the supply chain system of domestic leading coating companies, silicone product manufacturers, beauty and daily chemical brands, and electronic manufacturing enterprises. Downstream terminal enterprises have accelerated from import procurement to domestic substitution due to cost reduction, supply chain security, and localization supporting considerations, and the domestic penetration rate of high-end silica is rising rapidly.

At the same time, the policy level continues to escort domestic new materials, special support for new materials, localization and replacement catalogues of key consumables, and policy and financial support for the technical transformation and R&D investment of high-end silica production lines, so as to further promote the transformation of technological achievements and large-scale production.

The industry pattern has been reshaped, and the situation of "low-end involution and high-end dependence on imports" in the past has been completely reversed. Domestic enterprises with core modification technology and stable quality control capabilities have begun to transform from raw material manufacturers to high-end new material solution service providers; while relying only on the small and medium-sized production capacity of low-end general products, the market space continues to shrink.

The industry predicts that 2026-2027 will be the golden window period for silica import substitution, and the localization rate of high-end electronic grade, cosmetic grade, pharmaceutical food grade, and special rubber and plastic silica will continue to rise.
