Precipitated silica: The unsung hero behind low-gloss matte coatings

Hits: 1392 img

In the pursuit of a minimalist yet sophisticated aesthetic, matte coatings, with their understated luxury and soft, elegant visual effect, have become the preferred choice for high-end home and commercial space decoration. When the gloss level is ≤30°, the coating surface exhibits a delicate and soft visual effect, effectively reducing ambient light reflection and enhancing the sense of spatial depth. Precipitated silica, as the core matting agent in matte coatings, is the key material for achieving this effect.

Precipitated silica, also known as precipitated silicon dioxide, is produced through a sodium silicate acidification precipitation process. Its small particle size, large specific surface area, and rich hydroxyl groups allow it to form a microscopic textured structure in coatings. When light shines on the coating surface, these structures scatter the light, reducing specular reflection and effectively lowering the gloss level to achieve a matte finish. Compared to other matting agents, precipitated silica offers advantages such as high cost-effectiveness, excellent matting efficiency, and good dispersibility, while having minimal impact on the rheological properties of coatings, thus avoiding brush marks or orange peel effects during application.

In matte coating formulations, different gloss levels can be flexibly achieved by precisely controlling the amount of precipitated silica added. Simultaneously, its chemical stability enhances the weather resistance and scratch resistance of the coating, extending its service life. Whether applied to walls, furniture, or metal and plastic surfaces, matte coatings containing precipitated silica impart a premium texture to materials, satisfying consumers' dual demands for aesthetics and functionality.

With the increasing popularity of environmental protection concepts, the market demand for low-VOC matte coatings continues to grow. As an environmentally friendly matting agent, precipitated silica is helping the coating industry achieve a balance between high performance and sustainable development, bringing more possibilities to the decoration field.
