Qemetica Strategic Transformation: Closing Polish Soda Plant to Bet on Precipitation White Carbon Black Business

Polish chemical giant Qemetica recently announced that it will close its soda plant in Yanikovo before July 31, 2025, and instead focus on the precipitated white carbon black business. The chairman of the board of directors of the company, Kamil Majczak, pointed out that the price of EU carbon emission quota continued to rise, leading to a sharp increase in energy costs. In addition, Türkiye seized 30% of the market share in Europe with soda products produced by Russian low-cost energy, forcing enterprises to adjust their business structure.
It is reported that Qemetica has formed a global supply chain network covering the Americas and Europe after acquiring PPG's US white carbon black business in November 2024. The company plans to invest 230 million euros in the next three years to expand its production base in the United States, with the goal of increasing the production capacity of precipitated white carbon black to 450000 tons per year and seizing 15% of the global market share.
