Precipitated silica is manufactured by acidifying sodium silicate solutions, forming colloidal particles that aggregate into porous structures. Control over pH, temperature, and aging time allows tailoring of particle size (5–100 nm) and surface area (50–400 m²/g). Key advantages include high oil absorption, transparency in clear formulations, and cost-effectiveness compared to fumed silica. Applications range from tire tread compounds (reducing rolling resistance) to toothpaste abrasives and pharmaceutical excipients.
