Hydrophilic fumed silica, characterized by its high surface area (150–300 m²/g) and polar silanol groups, is widely used as a thickener, rheology modifier, and anti-settling agent in aqueous and polar systems. It reinforces silicone elastomers by forming hydrogen bonds and improves the mechanical properties of coatings and adhesives. However, its hydrophilicity limits use in nonpolar environments. Typical applications include food additives (E551), dental composites, and battery electrolytes.
