Add pigment or filler into the coating, evenly distribute it in the coating film and form a slightly rough surface. The larger the surface particles, the greater the microroughness, and the lower the gloss. Sometimes light calcium carbonate or talcum powder are used in the production of matt coating, and the amount is large, which often exceeds the critical pigment volume concentration of the coating, resulting in poor physical properties of the coating film, such as delamination and hard precipitation, which can be avoided by using matting agent. Commonly used matting agents are divided into organic and inorganic types. The inorganic matting agent is mainly white carbon black matting agent, whose chemical composition is silicon dioxide, which can be divided into two types: surface treated by organic matter and untreated. This paper focuses on the application of white carbon black matting agent in coatings.


Silica matting agent is made of quartz sand (powder) by grinding natural silica, which contains a lot of impurities. The main component is silica, which cannot be called silica, and has no matting performance. It can only be used as filler in the coating, without matting effect. The silica matting agent used as the coating is mainly synthetic silica, which is divided into two categories: fumed silica and precipitated silica, and its microstructure is amorphous or glassy. Silica synthesized by precipitation method is made from quartz sand as the main raw material, which is fused with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate in a kiln at high temperature and then processed. The fumed silica is prepared by the hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride vapor in the oxyhydrogen flame. Compared with natural silica, the silica of silica is high in purity, inert and resistant to ultraviolet light. The refractive index of amorphous silica is 1.46, which is close to the refractive index of many resins in the coating industry. Therefore, amorphous silica can be used as a matting agent in coatings, with good optical properties.
