Evonik introduces a new type of synthetic silica for coating

Hits: 3891470 2020-04-02

According to the latest reports of overseas media, the paint additive business department of Evonik industrial group announced that it has developed a philex? Silica wet chemical process. The material produced by the manufacturing process has a unique spherical particle shape, which can provide the advantages that the traditional white carbon black does not have.
It is claimed that changes in the wet process conditions allow control of many aspects of the final product, such as pH, surface area, pore volume, and other structural or morphological factors. As a result of this new wet chemical process, Evonik has launched three new white carbon black products for paints and coatings, namely, sprilex? Dp-0111, sprilex? Dp-0112 and sprilex? Dp-0115.
In the paint and coating industry, precipitated silica is recognized as an excellent matting agent. However, its functional characteristics ultimately depend on many different factors, such as particle size, particle size distribution, particle shape and so on. In other words, controlling these aspects means controlling the properties and benefits of precipitated silica. In terms of modern architectural coatings, polishing resistance and wet abrasion resistance are key formulation challenges and important differentiation factors. With existing filler or formulation options, formulators can only rely on limited support to overcome the challenges of differentiated products. These properties can be directly related to the particle morphology of the filler and the resulting film surface profile. The latest technological progress of Evonik has produced a new type of synthetic silica, which has unique spherical particle shape, narrow particle size distribution, and extremely low surface area and porosity.
In addition, regulatory issues and other challenges have resulted in a reduction in the number of materials available for formulation. For example, solvents soften the polymer and allow it to flow more freely to surround and wet the pigment particles in the paint, thus enhancing the bonding ability of the adhesive. Due to the requirement of VOC reduction, these solvents are more and more difficult to buy in the market, so formula designers must find new ways to reduce the demand of the solid in their formula as much as possible.
The new spherilex? Technology solves these challenges in the paint formulation, and provides a series of functional silica products with unique performance, which helps the formulation designer to realize new value in the synthetic silica technology. Advertisement
