What is the difference between precipitated silica and fumed silica?

1) Difference in manufacturing method: The white carbon black produced by the gas phase method and the white carbon black produced by the precipitation method are essentially the same, and the chemical name is silica. However, the gas phase method uses silicon tetrachloride and air combustion to obtain silicon dioxide with a fineness of more than 1000 mesh. The precipitation method uses sodium silicate to add sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid to precipitate the silicon dioxide. The fineness of conventional precipitated silica is only 300~400 days.

(2) Difference in basic physical parameters: Precipitation white carbon black contains water of crystallization, so it is also called hydrated silica (SiO2·nH2O). Silica, the content is 87%~95%, the average particle size is 11~100nm, and the density is 1.93 ~2.05g/cm3, pH value 5.7~9.5. Fumed white carbon black is also called anhydrous silica (SiO2), with a silica content of 99.8% or more, average particle size 8~19nm, density 200g cm, pH value 3.9 ~4.0. The reinforcing performance of silica mainly depends on the surface area (or particle size), structure and surface chemical properties. The surface area is measured by the BET method or the CTAB method, and the structure is measured by the DBP value or DOP value.

(3) Performance difference
① Fumed white carbon black
Advantages: good reinforcement, high tensile strength and tear strength, good abrasion resistance, hardening faster than precipitation method silica, and good transparency.
Disadvantages: Compared with precipitation method silica, it is easier to fly, heat generation is serious, the price is high, and the processability is poor (slow powder consumption, poor fluidity).
 
②Silica by precipitation method
Advantages: Compared with gas phase method silica, the price is cheaper, the processability is better than the gas phase method, and it is not as serious as the gas phase method white carbon black. The compression set is slightly better than the gas phase method white carbon black, and the heat generation is higher than that of the gas phase method white carbon. The black is slightly lower.
Disadvantages: The reinforcement is worse than that of the gas phase method silica, and the transparency is poor.
