When Should You Consider Hydrophobic Fumed Silica Instead of Hydrophilic Silica?

A customer may already be using a 200 m²/g hydrophilic fumed silica and ask:

“Should I change to hydrophobic fumed silica?”

There is no universal yes-or-no answer.

The choice depends on the formulation, processing conditions and target performance.

1. What Is the Main Difference?

Hydrophilic fumed silica has surface silanol groups and can provide reinforcement and rheology modification in many formulations.

Hydrophobic fumed silica is surface treated, changing its interaction with water and organic or polymer systems.

Therefore, two silica grades with similar BET surface areas should not automatically be treated as equivalent.

2. When Can Hydrophilic Fumed Silica Be a Practical Starting Point?

Hydrophilic fumed silica is widely evaluated for:

  • Silicone rubber
  • Adhesives and sealants
  • Industrial coatings
  • Other systems requiring reinforcement or rheology control

For example, IOTA HL7200 is a hydrophilic fumed silica with a listed BET surface area of 200 ± 20 m²/g and can be evaluated in these applications.

3. When Is Hydrophobic Fumed Silica Worth Evaluating?

Hydrophobic silica may be considered when the formulation requires different surface compatibility, moisture behavior, rheology or processing characteristics.

The important question is therefore not:

“Is hydrophobic silica better?”

It is:

“Does a surface-treated silica provide an advantage in this particular formulation?”

4. Can Hydrophobic Silica Directly Replace Hydrophilic Silica?

Not necessarily.

Changing the silica surface can influence:

  • Dispersion
  • Viscosity
  • Thixotropy
  • Processing
  • Reinforcement
  • Interaction with other formulation components

A direct one-to-one replacement without testing is therefore not recommended.

5. What Should You Tell the Supplier Before Changing Silica?

Provide:

  • Current silica grade
  • Hydrophilic or hydrophobic type
  • BET surface area
  • Current dosage
  • Base polymer or resin
  • Mixing process
  • Current problem
  • Target viscosity or rheology
  • Required finished-product properties

This allows the supplier to recommend a more relevant candidate instead of selecting only by BET value.

A Practical Evaluation Process

Current formulation → Define the problem → Select candidate silica → Equal-condition trial → Adjust process if necessary → Finished-product verification

The purpose is not to replace hydrophilic silica with hydrophobic silica whenever possible.

The purpose is to select the surface characteristics that better match the actual formulation.

FAQ

Is hydrophobic fumed silica always better than hydrophilic silica?
No. They serve different formulation requirements.

Can I select fumed silica only by BET surface area?
No. Surface chemistry, structure, dispersion and formulation compatibility also matter.

Can hydrophobic silica directly replace HL7200?
It should not be assumed. Parallel formulation testing is recommended.

When is HL7200 worth evaluating?
HL7200 can be evaluated when a 200 m²/g hydrophilic fumed silica is required for reinforcement or rheology modification.

What is the first step before changing silica grades?
Clearly define the current formulation, silica dosage, processing conditions and the problem you want to solve.
