Pigments or fillers are added to the paint, which are evenly distributed in the paint film and form a micro rough surface. The larger the surface particle is, the greater the micro roughness is, and the lower the gloss is. Sometimes, light calcium carbonate or talc powder are used in the production of matte coatings, and the amount is large, which often exceeds the critical pigment volume concentration of the coating and makes the physical properties of the coating worse, such as delamination and hard precipitation, which can be avoided by using matting agent. Commonly used matting agents are divided into organic and inorganic. Inorganic matting agents are mainly white carbon black matting agents, whose chemical composition is silicon dioxide, which can be divided into two types: organic and untreated. This paper mainly discusses the application of white carbon black matting agent in coatings.


Silica matting agent is made of quartz sand (powder) by grinding natural silicon dioxide. It contains a lot of impurities. The main component is silicon dioxide, which cannot be called silica and has no matting property. It can only be used as a filler in coatings, and has no matting effect. As a coating, silica matting agent is mainly synthetic silicon dioxide, which is divided into gaseous silica and precipitated silica. Its microstructure is amorphous or glassy. Silica synthesized by precipitation method takes quartz sand as the main raw material, which is prepared by high-temperature melting reaction with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate in a kiln and then post-treatment. Fumed silica is prepared by hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride vapor in oxyhydrogen flame. Compared with natural silica, silica is of high purity, inert and UV resistant. The refractive index of amorphous silica is 1.46, which is similar to that of many resins in the coating industry. Therefore, amorphous silica can be used as a matting agent in coatings and has good optical properties.
