Fumed silica has been industrialized since the 1940s. In the past decades of industrial production, no cases of silicosis caused by inhalation of fumed silica have been found. The International Association for research on cancer (IARC) stated that there is not enough evidence to prove that the synthetic amorphous silica has carcinogenic effect on humans or experimental animals.
Fumed silica is an amorphous silicon dioxide product prepared by hydrolysis of organohalosilane at high temperature in oxyhydrogen flame. Its primary particle size is between 7-40 nm, its specific surface area is generally greater than loomz/g, and the purity of the product is very high, with the content of silicon dioxide not less than 99.8%
